MCGUIGAN Wines - which has wineries in the Barossa Valley and Hunter Valley - has been named international wine maker of the year at a ceremony in London.

McGuigan Wines took out the title for the second time in three years at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

The company was also named Australian producer of the year at a gala ceremony.

Chief winemaker Neil McGuigan, who studied winemaking at South Australia's Roseworthy College, said the latest result outshone his previous win in 2009.

"To have won International Winemaker of the Year once is phenomenal, but to be recognised by our industry peers twice in just three years is mind blowing," he said in a statement.

"It's a truly once in a lifetime event."

The event attracted winemakers from more than 80 countries.
