Alle lidstaten van de Europese Unie hebben ingestemd met de wettelijke invoering van de naam: witte zinfandel. Bottelende Italianen hadden die naam eerder op Amerikaanse wijnetiketten gezet, waarna er een discussie ontstond. Die leidde ertoe dat er een zinfandel rosé en een grenache rosé uit voortkwamen. Nadere onderhandelingen tussen de VS en de Europese Unie volgden en resulteerden in een akkoord. De collega’s melden:

“The term White Zinfandel has been legalised across the European Union.

The news resolves an issue which arose last year, when Blossom Hill’s White Zinfandel and White Grenache were impounded by authorities in Italy, where the wines are bottled. The brand was forced to relabel the wines as Zinfandel Rosé and Grenache Rosé.

Percy Fox & Co, which owns the Blossom Hill brand, reported that its parent company Diageo and the Wine & Spirit Trade Association have since been working with the EU to resolve the dispute.

Following its inclusion on the agenda at a bi-lateral trade agreement meeting between the US and EU in November, White Zinfandel was officially recognised for use on labels within the EU and the decision was ratified by all 27 member states in December.

Confirming the news, a Blossom Hill spokesperson said: “While the liquid and product have remained constant during this period, we had altered the labelling to Zinfandel Rosé. The labelling will now transition back to White Zinfandel with immediate effect.”
