Grapes around the world are ripening weeks earlier than they used to.

So Australian scientists have been trialing artificial means of delaying the harvest.

A CSIRO team has applied a growth regulator to wine grapes and found that it postponed harvest by two weeks.

Dr Chris Davies, who led the research, says it will help growers better manage the harvest.

"What we're using is a synthetic compound which mimics a naturally occurring compound, and you can apply it directly to the plant," he said.

"And I guess the thing that was exciting for us was, when we made wine and tested it, there didn't seem to be any difference from the grapes that were picked two weeks later. So we were quite excited by that prospect."
